ON THE APPROACH

Academy of Art came up just short in their first two matches of the season, losing the opener at Cal State Monterey Bay despite their first goal of the year and then digging in against Northwest Nazarene in the second half but unable to mount a comeback in their home opener last weekend. The Urban Knights have never faced either of their upcoming opponents in the team's history.

TOWER OF BABEL
Soccer is known as the most popular sport in the world, played in virtually every country, and the Urban Knights are a microcosm of that fact. Just this year, ART U women's soccer has representatives from six countries including the United States, and seven members who require passports to come to play soccer for the Urban Knights. Newcomers Hanna Aronzon (Malmo, Sweden) and Jule Klandt (Bonn, Germany) are both around 5500 miles from their native countries when playing their home games in San Francisco.

WE'RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE
Mills College had a rough go of it last week, as the D-III school faced off against University of La Verne on Saturday and allowed 12 goals to the Leopards. The Cyclones have an even dozen freshmen on their team, and are led by senior goalkeeper Shauna Corbitt (Mukileto, WA).

THE SHARPE-R IMAGE
Jasmine Sharpe is entering her fourth year for the Urban Knights, and in her tenure at ART U has seen time all over the field. A lot of time. Creeping up on 5000 minutes, to be more specific. Sharpe has contributed at midfield, on the offensive, and as a defender, to a tune of the equivalent of 83 hours, or almost four straight days of soccer played in an Urban Knights uniform. She currently ranks third on the all-time list, sitting only behind Olivia Dupon and Jessica Madrid, both of whom graduated this past year.

NORTH OF THE BORDER
The Urban Knights will head north this weekend to take on Simon Fraser University, farther north than they have ever traveled in the past, and for the first time will be playing outside the confines of the United States. The women's soccer squad is not the first ART U team to play a game in Canada, as the men's basketball team played the Clan last year. Simon Fraser got their first win of the year last week against Hawai'i Pacific when Aja Choy-Halo lobbed a shot over the keeper to secure a 1-0 victory.

COMING UP SOON
The newly expanded PacWest schedule will start for the Urban Knights next week as they play the first of six straight games at home. The conference schedule starts with the new additions right off the bat, as ART U welcomes Azusa Pacific University (Sep. 13) and Point Loma Nazarene University (Sep. 15). Thursday's game against the Cougars will be played at Crocker-Amazon Field, while Saturday's contest against the Sea Lions is at City College of San Francisco.
