FIRST PITCH
The Urban Knights dropped two heartbreakers in the final at-bat to Cal Baptist in the doubleheader to close out the last series in Riverside, as the Lancers scored in the bottom of the seventh in Game One, and the bottom of the eighth in Game Two to notch walk-off victories in both games.
Myles Babitt, who also plays point guard for the ART U basketball team, got his first two starts of the year and went 3-7 in his debut.
WADE-ING TO EXHALE
Academy of Art shortstop/pitcher
Wade Broadstreet has impressed in the early going in all facets of his game, playing a clean shortstop, picking it up at the plate, and doing work on the mound. Last year's PacWest Freshman of the Year, Broadstreet has been very effective, leading the Urban Knights starters in ERA (3.07), innings pitched (14.2), and strikeouts (13), including a record-tying nine strikeouts in his last outing against Cal Baptist. However, Broadstreet is still without a win on the season, pitching in two complete game, one-run losses for the Knights.
CRUSADERS' MAN OF STEELE
Northwest Nazarene's Zach Steele is leading the club in many offensive categories, tied for first in home runs (3) and RBIs (10) with teammate Charlie Gorzo. The outfielder also has 20 total bases to lead the team, and is 2-2 in stolen bases. Northwest Nazarene also has had impressive starts from catcher Kaleb DeHass, who is batting .455 (15-33), and outfielder Sean McDonald, batting .325 with an OBP of .426 and 10 runs scored. On the other side of the ball, Charles Pollock has only allowed two runs in 12.0 innings, Zeb Sneed is averaging almost a strikeout per inning (15 K/15.2 IP), and Aaron Vaughn has a 0.93 ERA out of the bullpen.
KNIGHTS ON WATCH
Leadoff man
Johnathan Robbins has already broken the career runs scored record this season, now holding the ART U mark at 74 runs, while also extending his record 53 steals here in 2012. The right-fielder is also only four hits away from the program record of 102. Meanwhile,
Zach Mexicano became the new strikeout leader while in Riverside, recording his 97th punch-out to surpass
Darnell Quinney for first on the ART U charts.
