First Match With Fresno Pacific Ends In Defeat For ART U

Box Score

Fresno, CA --
Saturday night marked the second night game of the season for the Academy of Art University women's soccer team, but the first ever matchup between the Urban Knights and Fresno Pacific University ended in defeat for the Knights. The Sunbirds scored once early in each half and the Knights had opportunities but couldn't convert any into points as FPU held on to send ART U home with a 2-0 loss.

The Knights had a couple chances in the early going, as Beth Barker had back-to-back corner kicks in the 13th minute which led to shots by Hannah Emmett and Jasmine Sharpe that were both blocked by the defense before Louise Fillingham's header went wide. Barker had another shot in the 16th minute but Sarah King saved it for FPU. In the 17th minute, Rachael Rempe saved a shot from Demi Hamilton, but in the 21st, Jae Slocum got a through ball to Kathy Barreto who got an open look for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 FPU lead.

After halftime, less than two minutes in, there was a hard tackle by the Knights, which unfortunately led to a penalty kick by the Sunbirds that found the back of the goal and gave them a 2-0 lead. The Knights continued to get shots off down the stretch, but Fillingham's shot in the 67th minute was saved and Hannah Emmett's shot in the 80th minute went wide. Rempe made key saves in the second half, but the Knights offense could not find a way to score against the Fresno Pacific defense.

The Knights will play their final home game of the year next Friday against Notre Dame de Namur. It will be Senior Day for ART U's elder statesmen Jasmine Sharpe and Tanner McCandlish, and fan bus signups are available now.
