ART U FACES NDNU TWICE IN THREE DAYS

Coming off an impressive 3-0 victory over Chaminade last Saturday, the Academy of Art University men's soccer team looks to keep its momentum this week with a pair of matches against Pacific West Conference opponent Notre Dame de Namur. Three different Urban Knights recorded goals in offense-heavy shutout of the Silverswords.

OPENING KICKOFF
Academy of Art plays its first match against Notre Dame de Namur on the road this Thursday, Oct. 6 at Koret Field and then the rematch comes Saturday, Oct. 8 at Boxer Stadium.  Kickoffs will follow the women's match on both occasions with the first scheduled for 4:30 PM and the second at 3:00 PM. KNIGHT WATCH
ART U's dynamic duo of junior forward Grimur Grimsson and freshman forward Frederik Nagel are both currently among the top 10 scorers in the PacWest. Each has scored three goals apiece with shot on goal percentages that are both above .500 thus far. This past weekend, sophomore midfielder Patrick Heinemann scored his first goal of the year and sophomore forward Aron Ekberg tallied his first assist to put those two Knights next in line with three points apiece. Junior goalkeeper Ian Sutherland currently leads the team with 13 saves (10th in the PacWest) over four starts and 343 minutes played. His shutout against CUH earned him a PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll selection.

ANSWERING THE ARGOS
Notre Dame de Namur, who sits among the top three in the PacWest in goals scored, will enter this week's doubleheader having defeated William Jessup 8-0 on Oct. 1. An impressive 4-1 start to the 2011 season was abruptly changed when the Argonauts fell to Hawaii Pacific 1-0 and Cal Baptist 2-1. NDNU currently sports a 1-2 conference record. With seven goals to his name, Cristobal Montes ranks third in the PacWest in that category. Oscar Yniguez has set up his teammates on multiple occasions, bringing him to a conference-leading five assists. Goalkeeper Isiah Castro has started seven of nine matches and has collected 12 saves with seven goals allowed in that time.

THE CONFERENCE CHALLENGE
Head Coach Daniel Rosaia and the Academy of Art University men's soccer team play numerous elite teams in the PacWest Conference this season. Last season, the conference had three teams finish 10 or more conference victories including 2010 PacWest Champion Grand Canyon who was ranked #3 when the Knights faced them in the latter part of the year. As of the fifth NSCAA West Region poll, GCU and Hawaii Pacific are all among the top five with the Antelopes at #2 and the Sea Warriors holding #5.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
Following an extended stretch without a match, the ART U men's soccer team responded with a strong 3-0 victory over Chaminade last Saturday, Oct. 1. Heinemann netted a second minute goal off an assist from junior midfielder Brazer Bozlak and the Urban Knights held the lead en route to the win. Grimsson and Nagel each did their part to propel the offense with goals in the 34th and 47th minutes respectively while Sutherland and the Academy of Art defense turned away all attempts by the Silverswords to reach the scoreboard. ART U earned its first PacWest victory of the season with this result and also recorded its first shutout of an opponent this year as well.

LOOKING AHEAD
After finishing off this back-to-back stint against NDNU, Academy of Art will be on the road for its next three matches. The Knights first head across the bay to Dominican on Oct. 15 and then travel out-of-state to Phoenix, AZ for a pair of games at Grand Canyon.
