San Francisco, CA – The Academy of Art University's women's soccer team was put to the test when they hosted Dixie State University on Thursday afternoon. Dixie State who is a powerhouse in the Pacific West conference, showed their strength as their offense challenged the Knights all game. But ART U put up a good fight and their defense kept them in the game. After a hard fought game, the women ultimately fell to the Red Storm with a final score of 0-3.
The game started out pretty evenly matched, as the Urban Knights' defense was keeping the powerful Red Storm offense quiet. It wasn't until the 36th minute of play that the Red Storm took a one goal lead. But with solid defense and great goal keeping, the Knights kept Dixie to that single goal throughout the first half.
While the Knights' offense remained quiet in the second half, the Red Storm put in another goal, and added their third goal less than four minutes later. ART U then stepped up their game, and kept the Red Storm off balance for the rest of the second half. The women also stepped up offensively, attacking the goal by adding some shots of their own in the game. Despite their best efforts, the Knights dropped the match with a score of 3-0. The Red Storm outshot the Urban Knights 25-5, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Sophomore Carmela Doerr led ART U with two shots in the game. Senior Miriam Tolentino, and juniors Megan Bucci, and Morgan McKnight each posted a shot on the day. McKnight's shot was the lone shot on goal for her team. Sophomore keeper Melissa Co had a busy day in the net recording 11 saves and allowing just three goals.
For the Red Storm, Kelsey Tesoro led the way with two goals and one assist in the game. Whitely Davis also did well for her team by posting one goal and two assists.
After the loss, the Academy of Art University's record falls to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference, while Dixie State College's record improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Urban Knights play again on Saturday, September 18th against PacWest members Grand Canyon University. Game time is set for 4:00 pm at Boxer Stadium in San Francisco, CA.
