URBAN KNIGHTS PLAY FINAL NINE GAMES ON THE ISLANDS:

This Friday, Apr. 30, Academy of Art University baseball begins a nine-game roadtrip that will conclude its 2010 season. AAU faces Hawaii Pacific in a five-part series this weekend and the Knights then close out the year with four games versus Hawaii-Hilo early next week.

FIRST PITCH:

The AAU-HPU series starts on Friday, Apr. 30 with a single nine-inning game set to begin at 6:00 PM (9:00 PM PST). The following day, Saturday, May 1, Academy of Art and Hawaii Pacific play a doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 2:00 PM HST (5:00 PM PST). On Sunday, May 2, the series concludes with another doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 PM HST (3:00 PM PST). The first game on Sunday will be a PacWest Conference contest while the second will be non-conference. All five games will be played at Hans L'Orange Park in Honolulu, HI.

After one day off, the Knights travel to Hilo, HI and Wong Stadium for one doubleheader on Tuesday, May 4 and another on Wednesday, May 5. The first pitch of Tuesday's pairing is set for 4:00 PM HST (7:00 PM PST) while Wednesday's doubleheader begins at 12:00 PM HST (3:00 PM PST). Live score updates for the contests can be found on the Urban Knights' athletics site, Twitter, and CollegeFanz.

KNIGHT SPOTLIGHT:
The Urban Knight bats have certainly been heating up as evidenced by the incredible 38 runs scored by AAU over four games last week. Academy of Art now has three Knights batting above .300 topped by junior infielder/outfielder Ryan Worley who boasts a .328 average along with a team-high 18 runs batted in. Worley and sophomore outfielder Johnathan Robbins currently lead the PacWest Conference in stolen bases with 19 and 18 respectively. One week ago, junior Darnell Quinney earned a place on the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for both his outstanding offense and defense. Quinney was 7-for-15 (.467) in the four games with five runs scored, three RBIs, four walks, and one stolen base. Versus Bethany on Apr. 17, Quinney (1-9) struck out a program-high nine batters over 6.0 innings to get the victory in his only start. Also, senior right fielder Mike Gutierrez thrived while hitting in the cleanup spot in AAU's final two games last week. Gutierrez was 6-for-10 in those contests with one home run, four RBIs, and four runs scored.

SCOUING THE SEA WARRIORS:

It has been an exciting week for Hawaii Pacific baseball. After completing a six-game sweep in their latest series versus Hawaii-Hilo, the Sea Warriors clinched the PacWest Championship and officially set a new win record (34), topping the previous 32 victories in 1993 and 1999. HPU, who boasts the best offense in the conference, has also not experienced a losing streak this season. After taking five games from Academy of Art back in mid-March, the Sea Warriors enjoyed two separate three-game win streaks and are currently riding six victories in a row. This season, HPU has been tough at home with their 16-4 record at Hans L'Orange Park, but AAU did push the Sea Warriors to the limit when the teams met in Moraga, CA. Infielder Blake Amaral leads Hawaii Pacific with seven home runs and 48 runs batted in while infielder Kale Sumner bats .414 and has come around to score 44 times. In nine starts, lefty Caelan O'Meara is 5-1 with the best ERA on the team of the starting rotation (3.72). O'Meara also has the most innings pitched (55.2), but it is right-hander Toby Inouye (6-2) who paces HPU with 50 strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS:
The University of Hawaii-Hilo, whom Hawaii Pacific recently bested in a six-game series, played their best stretch of baseball at the tail end of a March roadtrip and into mid-April. During that span, the Vulcans won eight of nine contests including four against Dixie State, the second-best team in the PacWest. When Academy of Art and Hawaii-Hilo faced each other in the Bay Area, the two squads battled through a 15-14 Vulcan win in the first game of the series. In that game, Worley and Robbins combined to go 6-for-9 with six RBIs, five runs scored, and five steals so the top of the Knights' order will be key yet again. Outfielder Keoni Manago currently stands atop several UHH offensive categories including batting average (.400), hits (54), RBIs (32), and stolen bases (12). On the mound, Aaron Correa (3-2) owns the lowest ERA of starting pitchers (4.15) while Kekoa Lee (2-3) has a team-best 44 strikeouts over 46.1 innings pitched.

ACADEMY OF ART LOSES HEART-BREAKER TO PATTEN IN THE 10TH:
It was a roller-coaster ride for the Urban Knights versus Patten University on Sunday, Apr. 18 at San Leandro Ball Park. The game began with a 2-0 lead for AAU following back-to-back home runs by junior catcher Chris Vargas and Gutierrez. After the Lions got one back in the first it was not until the fifth that a team would score again. Patten rallied for three runs in that inning, but Academy of Art responded with a four-run surge in the seventh when three consecutive singles followed by a three-run double from Vargas sparked the comeback. With a 6-6 tie on the scoreboard, freshman shortstop Stefen Henderson came through with a run-scoring single in the 10th, however, the Lions plated two runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning and eked out a late-game victory. Gutierrez finished with a career-high four hits in the contest including a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
