Seaside, CA- The Academy of Art University battled Cal State Monterey Bay in a single game match up on Thursday afternoon. The Urban Knights' offense came alive as they took an early lead, but it would prove not to be enough to keep the Otters down. After four tough fought innings, the Otters finally broke away with the lead and ended up winning with a score of 12-2.
The Knights jumped on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Things got going when Ryan Worley singled and later scored from second off Mike Gutierrez's single up the middle. But the Otters answered right back by scoring once themselves in the bottom of the inning. They then added to their lead by scoring once in the second, twice in the third, and twice in the fourth.
AAU was able to muster up one more run in the top of the seventh when Kenny Rollins, Jr. scored on Worley's single; but that would be all the runs they would be able to score. CSUMB secured their win by scoring six more runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh.
The Urban Knights scored two runs on 10 hits, and committed two errors on the day.
Leading AAU's offense was Kenny Rollins, Jr. who went 3-3 in the game with one run scored. Ryan Worley stood out for the Knights going 3-4 with one run scored, and one run batted in; and Darnell Quinney put up big numbers going 3-2 with a stolen base.
Zach Mexicano started on the mound for the Urban Knights. He went one inning pitched, giving up one earned run, and two walks. Receiving the loss was Drew Sullivan-Hames, who only threw one inning and gave up two hits, one earned run, one walk, and posted one strikeout.
For the Otters, Sargenti impressed by going 3-5 with two runs scored. Also doing well was Flores who went 2-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in, and Chagonjian who also went 2-4 with two runs scored, and two runs batted in.
Recording the win for the Otters was McAlpin who came in to pitch in the fifth. He went three innings pitched giving up two hits, one earned run, and had two strikeouts.
After the loss, the Academy of Art University's record falls to 0-8 on the season, while CSU Monterey Bay's record improves to 2-15 overall. The Urban Knights play again tomorrow, March 5th, in their home opener. They are scheduled to take on Dixie State College in a double header. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00 AM at Saint Mary's College in Moraga, CA.
