Junior forward Andrew "Boomer" Cruz has been named to the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru NCAA Division II All-West Region Third Team. Cruz led the Urban Knights in numerous offensive categories this season, serving as an instrumental cog in the 2010 Academy of Art University men's soccer machine. Leading by example, the transfer from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo even broke a Pacific West Conference record during the team's most successful season in its three-year history.
“It's nice for a hard-working, team guy like Boomer to get an All-Region award,” Head Coach Daniel Rosaia said. “For a guy that's all about the team and all about the program, it's nice to see him rewarded on an All-Region level.”
For an Urban Knight squad that finished with a program-best 8-10 record (7-7 in the PacWest), Cruz completed the year with eight goals, one assist, and 17 points. Leading ART U with 35 total shots, Cruz finished with 23 attempts on frame. Of his various scores, two were game-winning goals which came back-to-back on the Hawaiian Islands.
While the Knights were in Hawaii enjoying their most successful trip in program history, Cruz added one more memory. The Pleasanton, CA native scored a PacWest record five goals in a single match against Chaminade on Sept. 29, 2010. Entering the NCAA record books for the achievement, Cruz became tied for 21st overall for most goals in a game across all of Division II men's soccer.
For many incredible highlights in his first season with ART U, Cruz was chosen as the PacWest Conference Newcomer of the Year for 2010 and garnered All-PacWest Second Team honors. In a conference loaded with impressive soccer talent, Cruz earned one PacWest Player of the Week award as well.
A total of 12 men's soccer players from the PacWest captured places on the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru NCAA Division II All-West Region Teams. See the complete team lists
