San Francisco, CA-- In their second meeting in five days Academy of Art University dropped another close match to the Notre Dame de Namur University Argonauts this afternoon at Boxer Stadium, 1-0. The Urban Knights were out shot 14-5, but it was a penalty kick in the 74th minute which would prove to be enough for NDNU to capture the win. The loss drops the Knights to 0-3 in PacWest play and 3-5-1 overall. The Argos are now 2-0 in conference play and 2-7 overall.
In the first half, the teams combined for just six shots in total with very few opportunities to score. Notre Dame de Namur was called for four offsides violations in the opening half while Academy of Art had just one and each squad's goalkeeper was responsible for just one save in the period. NDNU and AAU both played with a sense of urgency with the start of the second half, but the teams would remain scoreless for the first 73 minutes.
Eerily reminiscent of the ending to the 3-2 overtime match in Belmont, NDNU's tie-breaking goal came when forward Christobal Montes was fouled in the box in the 74th minute setting up a penalty kick. Freshman goalie Ian Sutherland guessed right on the shot, but was not able to dive high enough for the save.
Although Academy of Art University did not register a goal in the match, sophomore midfielder Richard Luna led the Knights with three shots and notched both of AAU's shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Waller turned in a solid effort with one save and no goals allowed in the opening 45 minutes. Sutherland did allow the goal though he also added three saves in his second half performance.
Notre Dame de Namur University was led by Montes who had four shots in the contest and defense from goalkeeper Isaiah Castro who earned the shutout with two saves in the full 90 minutes.
The Urban Knights will continue their seven-match homestand with a pairing against Grand Canyon University (4-1-1, 1-0 PacWest) this Saturday, Sept. 26 at Boxer Stadium. Kickoff for that game is set for 3:00 PM.
