Seaside, Calif. --The Urban Knights traveled to Seaside to battle the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, who had won just six of their 23 games, in a single game series. Despite striking first the Urban Knights were unable to stay ahead of the Otters, losing their 14th straight game of the season, 13-2.
AAU went three for three at the games start seeing
Ryan Worley (Oakland, CA),
Florentino Ubungen (San Francisco, CA), and
Chris Vargas (Foster City, CA) all reach a base.
Mike Gutierrez (El Sobrante, CA) would reach first on a fielder's choice which brought Worley home and gave the Knights their first out of the inning. The next play would result in a double play leaving the score at 1-0 in the middle of the first, and the Urban Knights on defense.
The Otters started their drive by scoring three runs in the first inning to put them up 3-1. Cal State Monterey Bay's offense stepped up to the plate and delivered, scoring in all but two innings and outhiting the Urban Knights, 10-9. The Otters were lead by senior
Steve Mays who went 3-for-4 with three doubles.
AAU's
Chris Vargas would hit a solo homer over center field in the third inning to bring the Urban Knights to within two. However the next three plays resulted in outs and retired the inning, 4-2 in favor of the Otters. The solo homerun by Vargas would be the last run for the Knights. The Otters would go on to score 9 more runs before the games end, winning 13-2.
The Urban Knights Starter
Zach Mexicano (Scotts Valley, CA) pitched three innings and lost his third game of the season, he faced 19 batters allowed six hits and gave up eight runs.
Danny Couser (Pinole, CA) came in for relief for three innings and gave up two hits and four runs. While
Edgar Zelaya (Granada Hills, CA) pitched two innings faced 10 batters and gave up two hits and one run. Offensively Vargas went 3-for-4, hitting his first homerun of the season and racked up his fourth RBI.
AAU will next play on Sunday, March 22 (at USF's Benedetti Stadium) and Monday, March 23 (at Menlo College's Cartan Field). Doubleheaders are scheduled for both days with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. The Urban Knights hope to garner a win at home this weekend against PacWest opponent University of Hawaii-Hilo.
