Phoenix, AZ -- The Urban Knights stayed with the best team in the PacWest for one half before Grand Canyon University unloaded four goals against AAU at GCU Soccer Field on Saturday night. The match ended with the Grand Canyon victorious 5-0, but the score did not reflect the effort by the Knights. Academy of Art finishes its second season 4-15-1 overall and 1-13 in the PacWest. The Antelopes complete their 2009 campaign as champions of the conference with a record of 14-3-2 overall and 11-1-1 in league play.
AAU and GCU battled one another through a scoreless 20 minutes of action before forward and PacWest Player of the Week Kyle Ciliento netted a ball from midfielder Jesse Baker. The scoreboard showed Grand Canyon up 1-0 for the remainder of first half.
With the match still close for the first 20 minutes of the second period, Academy of Art was forced to make an offensive move. However, the Antelopes responded to the shift with four goals in the final 25 minutes, including two more from Ciliento, to give them a 5-0 victory over AAU.
In their final match of 2009, the Urban Knights had single shots from junior midfielder Juan Zurita and freshman forward Brazer Bozlak in the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Waller went down with an injury prior to the first goal by GCU and freshman goalie Ian Sutherland took his place. He recorded five saves and allowed five goals in 69 minutes of action.
The Antelopes had yet another strong performance from Ciliento with his three goals out of five shot attempts. Defender Skylar Roy had a match-high six shots and one on goal. Goalie Ben Paneccasio recorded his 12th shutout of the season and did not have a save in the contest.
Academy of Art University men's soccer concludes the second season in the history of the program with a 4-15-1 record and its inaugural PacWest Conference season 1-13.
