San Francisco, Calif. (11/4/08)-- In Academy of Art University's final home stand of the season, the Urban Knights Men's Soccer team split a pair of matches with Northwest Nazarene University over two days. AAU won the first contest on Monday, 3-1, and then dropped the rematch on Tuesday, 2-1.
On Monday, the Crusaders got on the board right away. Five minutes into the match, Northwest Nazarene's Jose Oregon took an assist from Chris Voth to put the Crusaders up 1-0. However, a penalty kick situation in the 44th minute resulted in an unassisted goal by sophomore goalie Jose Herrera and a tie score, 1-1.
The Urban Knight defense responded by locking down in the second half, limiting Northwest Nazarene to just two shots while AAU added two more goals to take the match. In the 46th minute, freshman striker Emmanual Onywera dribbled into the Crusader defense and chipped a shot past the keeper. Onywera then assisted the match's final goal in the 75th minute when he crossed a ball to sophomore midfielder Ernie Simpson who shot it in.
Herrera finished with eight saves, including six in the first period while Crusader keeper Alexander Engemann totaled six saves.
Tuesday's rematch saw the Urban Knights fall 2-1. NNU quickly went ahead in the first half after an own-goal was scored by AAU's Jared Spires in the 18th minute. The lead then became 2-0 heading into halftime after Alex Mangeac found the net on an assist by Ben Mangeac in the 40th minute. The Urban Knights were the next to score as freshman midfielder Vilmundur Sveinsson recieved a cross from junior midfielder Jamie Patino-Calvo and kicked it home in the 65th minute. The final goal of the match came in the 75th minute when Alex Mangeac scored again off an assist by Brock Ogami.
Men's Soccer moves to 5-7-4 while Northwest Nazarene is now 10-8-2 on the season. AAU will play its season finale against the University of San Francisco Dons (6-8-2) on November 7th at Negoesco Stadium. Kick-off is set for 5pm.
