Derek Speer

Derek Speer is beginning his first year as a volunteer assistant coach for the Academy of Art University cross country and track & field teams.

Currently, Speer is a full-time student at  the Academy of Art where he is working on his second B.F.A. He is studying Industrial Design with a focus in transportation and clay modeling.

Prior to ART U, Speer was an elementary art teacher and coached cross country and track & field for three years in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. While coaching for Ben Davis High School, Speer helped coach many state qualifiers in track and a national champion at the 800M.

Before becoming a teacher, Derek was a 2009 graduate of the University of Indianapolis. While at UIndy, Speer was on an athletic scholarship where he competed at the NCAA Division II level in cross country and track & field. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree for his double major in Studio Art (Ceramics and Printmaking) and Visual Arts Education.

Speer currently resides in San Francisco, CA.
