AZUSA, Calif. – Academy of Art track & field saw its Urban Knights shine throughout multiple 800m competitions to begin the Bryan Clay Invitational as well as the Mt. SAC Relays and Cal State LA Twilight Open following last week's Bryan Clay Multis.
Amid a 127-runner field loaded with NCAA Division I talent,
Lina Hanich and
Grace Southern could both be found in the upper tier. At 2:04.83, Hanich was just over a second from the program record she set
earlier this month, taking eighth overall with her fourth NCAA Division II Outdoor Nationals provisional time of the season. Meanwhile, Southern delivered her second consecutive Outdoor Nationals provisional mark in the event, going 2:08.86 to not only achieve a new personal best but also rise to third in ART U history and top 20 in the nation.
The men's 800m Elite featured the fastest performance to date from
Ethan Forbes who was first across the finish line in his heat, besting others from Boise State, Lamar, and Seattle in the process. His time of 1:50.27 marked his first Outdoor Nationals provisional effort in the event this season (top 25 in the country) and swiftly took him to third all-time in program history.
A new personal record of 1:51.40 came for
Vaughn Lacour in the 800m open as he ended less than half a second from the Outdoor Nationals provisional standard. He claimed eighth out of 138 competitors in the event.
Both the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays will continue tomorrow.
