2025 Cal Season Opener Results
BERKELEY, Calif. – Steadily building toward having its complete complement of Urban Knights competing in the outdoor season, Academy of Art track & field's Saturday action inside Edwards Stadium was highlighted by
Robin Black's 400m hurdles NCAA Division II Outdoor Nationals provisionals and others debuting with high national rankings at the Cal Season Opener.
Finishing third of 12 on the day in the 400m hurdles, Black took more than half a second off his 2025 debut time in the event with a 52.73 on Saturday that elevated him to fourth in the country and one of six to hit the provisional standard for Outdoor Nationals. Black also ended up just half a second from the cutoff with his 14.80 in the 110m hurdles.
Covering a grand total of 2700m on Saturday,
Grace Southern began by putting herself third in NCAA Division II this season with a 4:30.90 mark in the 1500m. She finished first of 29 competitors in the event and soon added another strong performance in the 800m, going 2:12.89 to take second out of 29 in the competition while starting her at sixth in the nation.
The first outdoor 800m race of his Academy of Art career saw
Ethan Forbes best a 37-runner field by more than two full seconds with his 1:52.25 time. Multiple NCAA DI competitors were among those he surpassed as the Interaction & UI/UX Design major debuted at sixth in NCAA DII at the start of his outdoor collegiate career.
Less than a second from the Outdoor Nationals provisional threshold, the women's 4x100m collection of
Tresley Love,
Juvonna Cornette,
Erine Collard, and
Jaylen Walker crossed the finish line at 47.03, putting them seventh in the country to start.
The afternoon finished up with the men's 4x400m team of
Vaughn Lacour, Black,
Josh Shavies, and Forbes combining for a time of 3:14.94 to have the quartet open at fifth in NCAA DII in front of Azusa Pacific among others.
With its full roster in action following Indoor Nationals (Mar. 13-15), ART U will continue its outdoor campaign with Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational on Mar. 21-22.
