Academy of Art Shuts Out CSUSB 5-0 To Split TOC Day Two

TURLOCK, Calif. – Back for its second day in the Tournament of Champions, Academy of Art softball demonstrated its collective talent in a 5-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday as junior pitcher Kamielle Powell (1-3) set a new career-high with 10 strikeouts in the complete game shutout while junior infielder Audrey Allen hit the first ART U homer of the year. The Urban Knights put together another rally in their earlier game, battling back with three runs in the fourth inning of what would be a 7-3 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay.

GAME 1 – CSUMB 7, ART U 3
Using five hits to produce three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Otters tried to add on in the second, but stingy Academy of Art defense made multiple plays at home plate to keep them at bay. In the third, however, CSUMB put bat to ball six times to the tune of four more runs.

ART U responded in the inning that followed as a leadoff single by freshman outfielder Danielle Shinko and two hit batters led the Knights to drive in runs off swings by freshman infielder Riannah Maulupe, senior utility Alexis Folks, and graduate student outfielder Cailee Grayhorse-Pupecki. The teams combined to allow just two baserunners the rest of the way before Cal State Monterey Bay prevailed 7-3.

GAME 2 – ART U 5, CSUSB 0
A single by Shinko and walk to sophomore pitcher/utility Kayla Vaughan had the Knights threatening right away against Cal State San Bernardino, but neither side would score until the fourth when a two-run double from senior catcher/infielder Liberty Herrera drove in Maulupe and Grayhorse-Pupecki then junior catcher/infielder Olivia Glover plated her teammate for the 3-0 advantage.

After Powell struck out the side on just 13 pitches in the fourth, ART U added on in the fifth with Folks providing her third RBI of the year on a single to left. Powell sat down two more Coyotes on strikes in the fifth and exited a jam on her ninth strikeout with a pair on base in the sixth. Allen homered on the third pitch she saw in the seventh to make it a 5-0 ballgame and Powell would reach double-digit strikeouts for the first time as a collegiate pitcher in the seventh as she finished off her third career shutout.

Academy of Art, now 1-9 in 2025, had Powell's zero runs allowed on five hits and three walks in 7.0 innings come with 10 strikeouts while Allen homered as part of a 1-for-4 performance in the nightcap and Herrera provided two runs batted in with a double and 1-for-3 outing. Folks drove in one run in each of Saturday's two games and Shinko added hits in both, finishing 3-for-7 with one run scored.

Cal State Monterey Bay improved to 6-2 with the win which was powered by four perfect innings from Bella Serrato (1-0) in relief as well as Ellie Escalante's 1-for-2 effort that included two runs batted in. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 4-6 on the season after managing just five hits and four runs allowed by Ashley Legler (2-1).

The Urban Knights will wrap up the Tournament of Champions with a noon first pitch against SF State at Pedretti Park – Field 2.
