ART U Falls 2-0 Despite Peoples' Double-Digit Saves

SAN FRANCISCO – Though Academy of Art women's soccer kept Cal Poly Humboldt scoreless in the opening frame, the Urban Knights dropped a 2-0 result in the Lumberjacks' favor in the last match of their three-part homestand to open their 2024 campaign.

Not allowing any member of Humboldt to find the back of the net in the first half, the Jacks put up 10 shots on ART U including three to start off the match in the first five minutes. Sophomore forward Jade Alverio followed those up with a shot in the seventh minute, but it would fall off target. Three more shots would come from the visitors before halfway through the opening frame, but senior defender Haley Vaughan would answer with a shot from midfield off a free kick that required Adea Nunes to make a diving save. Cal Poly Humboldt closed the half with four more shots, but graduate student goalkeeper Nicole Peoples held strong to bring the match into the half tied and scoreless.

Just six minutes into the second period, Frida Duran Arellano put the Jacks up by a score off a breakaway one-on-one that was sent in by Camryn Patten. The Knights would respond by getting the ball into the opposing area, but Humboldt would strike once again in the 78th minute to put themselves up 2-0 on an Alexis Blue goal, assisted by Duran Arellano. ART U would get two more shots off before the end of the match including one on target from junior forward Danielle Medellin that almost sneaked its way under the bar, but a jumping effort would be enough from the Lumberjacks' goalkeeper.

Following a season-high of 11 saves in net for a match, Peoples leads the Pacific West Conference in saves per game with a 9.33 average with her 28 total.

ART U will get a week-long break as they will next travel down to Fresno Pacific where they'll take on the Sunbirds on Saturday, Sept. 21 with a 6 p.m. kick-off.
