Knights Keep Sea Lions At Bay With 4-1 Victory Over PLNU

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Headed straight to the Pacific West Conference Championship, No. 48 Academy of Art women's tennis earned their spot by way of a singles victory from senior Viktoria Leth on Court 5 to clinch the 4-1 victory over Point Loma on Friday.

Doubles action started off the day for the Urban Knights, with sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean cruising through Amanda Letzring and Quin Brady on Court 2 with a 6-1 score. After a competitive match on Court 1, junior Paulina Alvarez and Leth took down Anna Pallencaoe and Jazlyn Miyamura with a 7-6 (7-2) tie-breaker to put ART U up 1-0 as the pair entered singles action.

No. 62 Plazas changed that score to 2-0 fairly quickly, defeating Thelma Sepulveda 6-4, 6-1 on Court 2. After the Sea Lions gained a point back with a win on Court 3, Alvarez did her part on Court 6 where she boosted the lead back up to two from her 6-4, 6-2 victory against Melissa Zirkle. In a match that reached its third set with a 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 score, Leth triumphed over Anna Pallencaoe once again to secure the victory for the Knights and to punch the ticket to the Championship match tomorrow.

No. 48 Academy of Art women's tennis enters its first title match since 2019, this time against the No. 19 Azusa Pacific Cougars who have been to this stage of the postseason for now four-straight years. First serve will commence tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
