Women's Tennis Runs Back A Victory Over Dominican, 4-3

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – No. 45 Academy of Art women's tennis battled with Dominican for the second straight match up, and came out victorious once again after an initial lead that turned into a clinch before the final score settled at 4-3.

Cruising through doubles, sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean recorded the first win of the day for the Urban Knights, defeating Maria Gavrilov and Astrid Craig 6-2 on Court 2. Clinching the doubles points for ART U were junior Paulina Alvarez and senior Viktoria Leth on Court 3 with their 6-2 victory over Deepa Vanaraja and Carolina Guerrero. Potentially allowing insurance for the squad was freshman Amelija Supulniece and junior Erica Hellbe who held a 5-3 lead before their match would conclude as unfinished. Coming out of doubles play, the Knights would be up 1-0.

Maintaining her tear on the singles court over the last several weeks, Plazas would win once again with another victory over Gina Dudley on Court 2, this time with a 6-2, 6-1 final score to put the Knights up by two. After a Leth victory on Court 4 with a 6-4, 6-1 score over Gavrilov, Najean would defeat Vanaraja on Court 3, 6-3, 6-4 to complete the clinch and give Knights the win.

All Knights remained competitive with the other three singles matches all going to three sets, which included a 7-6 (16-14), 3-6, 7-10 match for freshman Georgiana Parr. With the victory, ART U concludes its 2024 regular season with a 10-5 overall record while Dominican ends 11-6.

On next Wednesday, Apr. 17, Academy of Art women's tennis will begin the Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament in Surprise, Ariz. at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex, with a start time set for 9 a.m.
