Softball Closes TOC By Nearly Coming Back Against CSUSB

TURLOCK, Calif. – Following a day where weather wreaked havoc with the Tournament of Champions and canceled most games, Academy of Art softball was able to complete its two contests on Sunday, falling to Sonoma State 5-1 in what was a pitchers' duel for the first three innings before twice in the late frames of what became a narrow 4-2 loss at the hands of Cal State San Bernardino out at Pedretti Park.

GAME 1 - SSU 5, ART U 1
After both sides were retired in order to start the afternoon, leadoff singles by senior infielder Katie Humphreys and the Seawolves began the teams' respective second innings, but it was not until SSU's half of the fourth when the first run was scored. A double, walk, single, and wild pitch put Sonoma State on the board then an error turned it into a 3-0 ballgame.

The fifth frame was scoreless before the Urban Knights broke through in the sixth on a pair of singles by junior utility Alexis Folks and senior outfielder Cailee Grayhorse-Pupecki followed by a sacrifice fly from Humphreys. The Seawolves, however, added two more runs in the next half inning en route to the 5-1 final.

GAME 2 – CSUSB 4, ART U 2
Cal State San Bernardino struck first in both teams' final game of the tournament, going up 1-0 on a run-scoring single in the second inning, but freshman pitcher Kayla Vaughan (3-8) continued to work with her defense to blank the Coyotes in the two frames that followed.

Though CSUSB plated another in the fifth on an error, Academy of Art took back one run in the fifth after speed from senior infielder Haley Randall helped produce a scoring opportunity before touching home on a squeeze bunt dropped down by sophomore utility Marissa "Roo" Menard.

Cal State San Bernardino came back with two more unearned runs in the sixth, and, after two singles helped lead to a score in the sixth, ART U had multiple chances with the potential tying run at the plate over the final frames, the Coyotes walked away 4-2 victors.

Academy of Art, who departs the Tournament of Champions at 7-20 overall, had hits come from Folks (3-for-6) and Randall (2-for-6) in both of Sunday's contests with Randall adding a stolen base and a run scored. Humphreys drove in a run as part of her 1-for-2 effort in the first game and Menard tallied one RBI in the second.

The victory for Sonoma State put the Seawolves at 16-10 on the year after a 2-for-2 effort from Rylee Nishimoto included a double, a triple, and two runs scored alongside one run allowed on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in a complete 7.0 innings from Bailee Reed (8-4).

Cal State San Bernardino won its second game of the day to improve to 16-12 overall, utilizing contributions from a trio with singular RBIs and two runs allowed on three hits plus one walk and one strikeout in Samantha Vargas' (7-5) complete 7.0 innings of work.

Returning to Pacific West Conference play next, ART U starts a 12-part Hawaii road trip with a series at UH Hilo that spans Mar. 29-30.
