Season-High Four Goals Puts Academy of Art Over CSUM

SAN FRANCISCO – Recording their season-high in goals scored and shots taken in 2024 against Cal Maritime on Wednesday afternoon, Academy of Art men's soccer initially began the match with the lead, and then shut the door after the Keelhaulers snuck their way back into the action with a 4-2 final score.

After the Urban Knights shot the ball on 13 occasions in the first half, their most in a half on the season as well, they held CSUM to none while scoring twice in the opening frame. Helping create the first score of the day was freshman midfielder Keita Goto, as he dished the ball out to the left side of the box where a sprinting junior forward Kristian Lonvig would retrieve the through ball. Lonvig then proceeded to send in a left-footed cross towards the center of the box straight to sophomore midfielder Joey Glaab who scored the tap-in to give the Knights a lead in the 22nd minute. Building upon that advantage just nine minutes later was senior defender Chris Stokes as he scored a header towards the left post off a junior forward Adrian Lechuga cross. ART U would enter the half with a 2-0 lead over the Keelhaulers.

With four shots in the second half compared to their first half total of zero, CSUM showed that there was still a half to be played after they netted two all in the matter of the first 17 minutes of the second frame, both from Jose Diaz. With the match now tied 2-2, Joey Glaabsophomore midfielder Heath Nager responded in the 76th minute to give the Knights the lead once again. The goal to go up a score was created by Lonvig once again to earn his second assist of the match, as he sent in a low cross this time that never left the ground, which glided across the box to the foot of Nager who knocked it in across the goalkeepers line to the bottom right corner.

Within another 10 minutes, the Knights went up two for the second time on the day as Glaab scored his second goal off of Lechuga's second assist, knocking in a header off the left post that found its way in the net. For the final seven minutes, no more goals were scored as the battle rounded out with a 4-2 final.

With a plethora of scores from Academy of Art in the match with Cal Maritime came with a plethora of milestones as well, as the Knights saw their second-most assists in a game (5), the fifth-most team points (13), and seventh-most goals (4) in ART U program history. For Glaab, it was his third time recording a brace in his career after doing so twice in 2023.

With another match later this week, ART U will next gear their attention back to Pacific West Conference play as they are set to host Menlo this Saturday, Oct. 26 with an 11 a.m. start time from Treasure Island.
