Penguins Sneak Away With 2-1 Win Over Urban Knights

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Although freshman midfielder Piper Schmidt of Academy of Art women's soccer put away her first collegiate score against Dominican to tie the match up, the Penguins responded late in the second half to sneak away from the Urban Knights and take the Pacific West Conference win 2-1.

Striking first to put the Penguins up in the 10th minute was Ysabella Belandres who scored off a ball flipped over the goalkeeper and inside towards the back post. Shortly after, Schmidt saw the first goal of her career find its way towards the back of the net as she collected a ricochet off the goalkeeper and struck the ball towards the far post, initially dished in by sophomore forward/midfielder Alanna Del Carlo. The match would see no more scores in the first half, and the score would be settled at 1-1 entering the break.

Nearly 44 minutes would be played before the next goal of the match with each freshman midfielder Zeena Grewal, sophomore midfielder Mackenzie Dowd, and defender/forward Halldóra Einarsdóttir taking a shot, but it was eventually Megan Clapinski who put away her fourth of the season by knocking in a header off of a free kick to steal the match away from the Knights as the final score resulted 2-1 in the Penguins' favor.

Graduate student goalkeeper Nicole Peoples did all she could as she recorded yet another double-digit save performance by collecting 10 on 27 shots faced throughout the duration of the match. She became the fourth Urban Knight in program history to surpass 200 career saves with the performance, rising to third all-time at 201.

ART U will be back at it for more PacWest action this weekend, as they'll play host to the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 19 with a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
