HILO, Hawaii – Contributions came from all around during Academy of Art men's basketball's Pacific West Conference matchup with UH Hilo on Monday, as all five members of the Urban Knight starting squad scored in the double digits in a game that solidified a Hawaii trip sweep for the first time in school history by way of the 80-63 victory for ART U.
"What a great win tonight for our team," said Head Coach
Scott Waterman. "Going 3-0 on the Hawaii road trip is so tough, but we met the challenge each night, continued to get better, and executed our game plan. Tonight our defensive effort and pressure set the tone in the first half and took Hilo out of what they wanted to do. Forcing 21 turnovers was huge and I am just really proud of how we played tonight!"
The Knights, who improved to 11-5 overall, 7-2 in conference, and jumped into a tie for the conference lead in the PacWest standings, saw a close contest for the first 14 minutes of the opening frame against the Vulcans, now 5-4 in conference and 11-7 overall. UH Hilo held a lead of seven at one point, but the Knights quickly overcame their early deficit and took control as they leaped ahead of the Vulcans and collected a 12-point advantage at the half with a 33-21 score.
In the second half, ART U never looked back as their lead grew to as many as 21 points. With 54.8 percent shooting from the field in the second frame from the squad, the ART U starting crew and supporting cast never allowed the Vulcans a chance to climb back into it, locking down on defense where they allowed zero total second chance points. With 21 turnovers from UH Hilo, the Knights took advantage throughout the game, tallying up 20 points off of those miscues, compared to the Vulcans' six. In a smooth and clean victory, ART U claimed the game with a 80-63 final score.Â
Senior forward Latrell Williams now stands on the brink of ART U history in multiple statistical categories, as he collected his 21st career double-double in the contest (10 points, 11 rebounds) which is now tied for the most in school history, and is now just two rebounds shy of the program's career record (612). Junior forward Jamal Fuller tallied the team-lead in points by game's end (15), while junior guard Treylon Payne and junior forward Isaiah Williams collected 13 points apiece, and junior guard Rodney Munson joined them in the double-digits (11). Additionally in the contest, redshirt sophomore guard Eli Taylor tied his season-high in steals (3) and junior forward Quintin Metcalf recorded his season-high in rebounds for the second straight game (9).
Kalique Mitchell of UH Hilo played a strong game for the Vulcans as he recorded 19 points for his squad while Carlos Ramsey Jr. added on 13 of his own.
The Knights will now return to the mainland for one more contest on the road as they take on Dominican on Saturday, Jan. 20 with a 3:30 p.m. tip-off at the Conlan Center.
