SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art women's soccer saw a memorable moment with the first goal of sophomore forward
Danielle Medellin's career, however, it was the Sharks of Hawai'i Pacific who would come out victorious, taking Saturday's Pacific West Conference matchup by a final of 3-1.
The Urban Knights, who are now 1-8-0 and 0-3-0 in PacWest play, generated offense in the first half with multiple shot attempts, two of which were struck by senior defender Raquel Calvo Mendez (one on target). Hawai'i Pacific, who improved to 1-4-3 overall and 1-0-2 in the PacWest, goalkeeper Nicole Maler was up to the challenge, making a save against Calvo Mendez to keep ART U off the board. The Knights and Sharks would go into halftime tied up with no scores allowed by either team.
It wasn't until the 57th minute when the first score of the match finally came, with Saraya Burghardt of HPU back-heeling it in following a pass into the box off a corner kick. The Sharks would find the net again in the 64th, with Caylie Uyema tapping it in off a deflection in the box. HPU now led 2-0 before Medellin found the net shooting from around halfway between the goal and midfield, sending the ball to the far post on a lob right over the Sharks goalkeeper and just under the crossbar.
With the Knights only now trailing to a one-goal deficit, Uyema would find the back of the net just one minute later, heading it in off a cross from teammate Justice Valdez. The Knights were given a few more opportunities to try and get themselves back in it, but inevitably never found a goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Hampton recorded eight more saves in the match, keeping her first-place status out of all PacWest goalkeepers in saves per game. Redshirt junior defender Katie Williams played another full 90 minutes, now playing in 810 this season total, which is every minute of the Urban Knights' year thus far.
Academy of Art will get the chance to rebound next Saturday in their first match of their upcoming road trip down in Southern California against Concordia on Oct. 7 with a kickoff slated for 6:30 p.m.
