Women's Soccer Drops Narrow Defeat Hosting Dominican

SAN FRANCISCO – Tuesday's match for Academy of Art women's soccer was a scoreless battle until Dominican was able to sneak one in the back of the net on an 89th minute corner kick, handing the Urban Knights a 1-0 defeat in their last match before Pacific West Conference play begins.

Graduate student goalkeeper Nicole Peoples had an outstanding first half of action, keeping ART U (1-5-0) in the match by making six saves and multiple caught crosses against a very active Penguins (3-4-0) offense that posted seven total shots in the first half. The Urban Knights managed a shot of their own off of a free kick from sophomore forward Danielle Medellin that required good defense from the Penguins.

Throughout the second half Peoples continued to dominate in goal, making numerous diving attempts to block shots as she tacked on eight more saves. The Knights had some offense of their own, recording more shots (4) in the second half including two with one on goal from freshman midfielder Ashley Tasev. A corner kick for the Penguins as time was expiring was all Dominican needed to steal the victory from Academy of Art as Alejandra Melendez curved one in from the flag that deflected off the ART U defense.

Peoples' 14 total saves in her 87 minutes played places her into third place in the PacWest Conference rankings for saves (41) and increases her first-place lead in saves per game (10.3).

The Urban Knights will begin PacWest Conference play on Monday, Sept. 25 as UH Hilo comes to Paul Goode Field with a kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
