Eight Knights Get Shots Off In Sunday Showdown With StMU

SAN FRANCISCO – In the last match of the season-opening six-game homestand, Academy of Art men's soccer fell to No. 20 St. Mary's (Tex.) 3-0 on Sunday at CCSF Soccer Field.

The Rattlers started off the match playing patiently and keeping the majority of possession to themselves through the first 15 minutes of play, waiting for their time to find an opening. The Urban Knights answered with five quality looks within a six-minute span shortly after, which included two shots on goal from junior forward Alejandro Palos and senior midfielder Kendryx Soriano that were saved by the Rattlers' goalkeeper.

Alexander Carey of StMU was the first to strike a goal in the 30th minute on a dish from Ferrer Andrick. He received a cross played into the box from the opposite side, cut to his right in the penalty box, and scored on a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner of the net.

The Urban Knights did well to keep the Rattlers off the board for the rest of the first half, but in the 64th minute Carey found the net yet again, with Avery Estell slotting one in a few minutes later as StMU went on to take the match 3-0.

Academy of Art had eight different players record a shot which included a team-high two attempts from sophomore midfielder Nixon Thompson. Freshman midfielder Joey Glaab recorded another full 90 minutes, continuing his stretch of playing every minute so far on the year, and sophomore goalkeeper Jaiden Brooks added six more saves onto his season total, currently ranking second in the Pacific West Conference in saves per game with an average of 4.33.

After the loss, ART U falls to 0-3-3 overall while the Rattlers improve to 4-1-1. Academy of Art will take its first trip of the season out to Stanislaus State on Tuesday, Sept. 19 to play the Warriors under the lights at 7 p.m.
