East Bay Captures Both Sides Of Twin Bill Hosting ART U

HAYWARD, Calif. – Multiple Urban Knights drove in runs for Academy of Art softball on Tuesday out at Pioneer Softball Field, but Cal State East Bay walked away with victories of 9-1 and 11-3 when all was said and done in the non-conference doubleheader.

GAME 1 – CSUEB 9, ART U 1 (5)
Starting the day with an opportunity to score, Academy of Art had junior infielder Haley Randall reach on an error then steal second, but after managing to exit the threat unscathed, the Pioneers used five hits to produce four runs in their half of the opening frame.

Like Randall, junior outfielder Maddie Sticka put herself into scoring position with a single followed by a stolen base in the third, but she was left stranded and soon the CSUEB lead grew to 8-0. In the fifth inning, a two-out single from Sticka was soon followed by junior utility Cailee Grayhorse-Pupecki's first triple of the season (fifth of her career to put her tied for fifth in ART U history) as the Knights got onto the scoreboard. Cal State East Bay, however, would use some small ball to scratch across one more run in their half of the fifth, ending the contest at 9-1.

GAME 2 – CSUEB 11, ART U 3 (6)
Capitalizing on another table-setting start in the second contest, Randall walked and stole second before being driven in by senior catcher/utility Cassandra Mittman's first double of the year. Freshman pitcher Kamielle Powell (1-5) would retire the Pioneers in order to set up a pair of hit batters who turned into runs for Academy of Art via an error in the second.

ART U's 3-0 lead did not last long as four hits, including two that each produced a pair of scores, had Cal State East Bay move in front 4-3 in next half inning. The one-run margin held until the fourth when the Pioneers added four more and went on to end the game with an additional three runs in the sixth.

Academy of Art, now 1-9 overall this season, got a 1-for-2 effort from Grayhorse-Pupecki including one run batted in and one run scored while both Randall and Mittman each tallied one RBI in game two as part of their 1-for-2 and 1-for-3 performances in that contest. Sticka took over the team's batting average lead after a 2-for-2 game one which included one run scored.

Cal State East Bay rises above .500 with the day's results, sitting at 6-4 after nine different Pioneers drove in runs across the twin bill. Picking up the wins in the circle, Anamaria Beard (2-1) tossed 4.0 innings of one-hit ball with one strikeout in game one then Savannah Barchus (1-0) did not allow a hit in her 4.1 innings of work.

The Urban Knights next match up with Menlo for the first time since 2010 on Friday, Feb. 17 in a noon doubleheader from Mission Blue Field.
