CHICO, Calif. – In its final non-conference contest of the season, Academy of Art women's basketball shot over 64 percent from the field while combining with Chico State to score 55 points in the first quarter, but the Wildcats took the 89-68 victory inside Acker Gymnasium on Saturday.
The game was a three-point shootout early as the Urban Knights knocked down each of their first three triples, two from sophomore guard
Alba Rovira Ayuso and one by freshman guard
Maddie Morrow, while Chico State was also perfect on its first three attempts from long range. That success fueled the Wildcats' ensuing 9-0 run which helped them establish a 34-21 advantage by the end of the opening quarter with both teams shooting over 61 percent from the field (the Knights were at .643 with just five misses on their 14 attempts).
Though layups by Morrow and junior forward
Yasmine Sifaoui had the difference at 43-28 midway through the second quarter, Chico State had it back up to 22 points and, following 3-pointers from graduate student guard
Emilia Dougherty and freshman guard
Anna Fornells, a 54-36 score was taken to halftime.
Scoring on four of its first five possessions out of the break, Academy of Art cut the margin down to 14 points on a layup by junior forward/center
Christy Ojide, but a 12-4 Wlidcats push eventually separated the home team once again and seven fourth quarter points from freshman guard
Lucia Revenga could not prevent the eventual 89-68 win for Chico State.
Academy of Art finishes its non-conference slate at 1-5 on the year after three Knights shared the team's scoring lead as Revenga, Rovira Ayuso, and Morrow each posted 12 points apiece. Revenga added two steals, marking her fifth game with at least a pair, and Rovira Ayuso contributed five rebounds plus three assists. Ojide finished with 11 points and six rebounds while Fornells distributed a season-high five assists to go with her eight points.
Now 3-2 overall this season, Chico State had standout performances from Zhane Duckett (25 points, 14-for-16 from the foul line, six assists, five rebounds) and Jordan Allred (22 points, 9-for-18 from the field).
"As we wrap up the non-conference part of the schedule, we have grown a lot as a program and I am extremely proud of our group," said Head Coach
Jesse Clark. "Our inconsistent reps defensively have again resulted in allowing a quality Chico State team to get into a good groove offensively. We are excited to begin PacWest play and all of the opportunities that await our team."
With November action complete, ART U will look to a Dec. 7 matchup with Azusa Pacific that will open the Pacific West Conference portion of the season.
