TURLOCK, Calif. – Academy of Art women's basketball shot over 47 percent from the field in a first quarter the Urban Knights controlled, but Warrior Classic host Stanislaus State was able to regain and maintain a lead in the second quarter and beyond toward an 84-65 victory inside Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Friday night.
Layups by sophomore guard
Alba Rovira Ayuso and junior forward/center
Christy Ojide put ART U ahead 6-3 to start and that lead would hold throughout the first quarter as junior forward
Yasmine Sifaoui added two baskets. With under a minute left in the opening quarter, graduate student guard
Emilia Dougherty knocked down a deep 3-pointer to extend the Knights' margin and it would rest at 18-16 heading to the second frame.
The Warriors would tie the contest less than a minute later and subsequently gain a lead, but freshman guard
Maddie Morrow's triple stopped what had become a 9-0 run by Stan State. Morrow later drained another shot from long range and graduate student guard
Briana Baker-Bruce followed that with a layup before Rovira Ayuso's 3-pointer made it a one-possession ballgame at 33-30. Stan State added another 6-0 run, but free throws by Sifaoui kept the difference at 40-34 Warriors at the intermission.
An 8-0 beginning to the third quarter for Stan State was countered by a pair of triples from Morrow and, as action oscillated back and forth, soon the fourth frame brought a 58-49 margin favoring the home team. After shooting over 47 percent from the field in the second and third quarters, the Warriors continued to stay hot in the fourth, upping that mark to over 62 percent in the frame alone on their way to a 84-65 victory.
ART U drops to 1-2 overall this season despite Morrow's best scoring performance of the season with her five 3-pointers yielding a team-high 15 points along with four assists and three rebounds. Rovira Ayuso provided 11 points (on 5-for-11 shooting from the field), seven rebounds, and three assists while Sifaoui added 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Nearly joining her teammates in double figures offensively, freshman guard
Anna Fornells contributed nine points while grabbing four rebounds and two steals.
Stanislaus State, now 2-1 on the season, Mya Blake finished with a game-high 17 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field.
"We got taken out of system tonight on both ends and got into some difficult matchups with the early fouls, making it difficult to contend with Stanislaus inside," said Head Coach
Jesse Clark. "The good thing about playing in a tournament is we get to dust ourselves off and go again tomorrow."
The Urban Knights will return to Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena for their final game in the Warrior Classic tomorrow, matching up with Cal State East Bay, who fell to Simon Fraser 67-65 on the other side of the tournament, at 1 p.m.
