HILO, Hawaii – Thursday night's Pacific West Conference women's basketball matchup between Academy of Art and UH Hilo featured yet another standout performance from sophomore forward/center
Alisha Wilson, but the Urban Knights could not recover from a solid opening half by the home team who prevailed 60-48 inside the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
After neither side scored in nearly the first two minutes, the Vulcans found themselves ahead 12-2. Fighting back against the deficit, sophomore guard
Jadence Clifton would subsequently provide free throws and freshman guard
Kyla Wandick added a layup to make it a six-point game, 12-6, moving to the second quarter where both teams' offenses began to flow.
A 7-2 start to the frame was met by the first of Wilson's 10 points in the quarter, but UH Hilo pushed a double-digit advantage thereafter and held it through halftime. The final minute was furious as both sides scored twice with Wilson converting a pair of jumpers ahead of the 33-20 score at the intermission.
Wilson, who achieved her seventh double-double in as many games less than two minutes into the second half, provided a basket followed by freshman guard
Madison Johnson's 3-pointer as ART U cut the margin to 38-27, but the Vulcans had it back to 43-29 by the start of the fourth quarter. Remaining there for the first portion of the final frame, the margin increased briefly, but ended at 60-48 with Wilson and senior guard
Lauryn Manns working in tandem to score the Knights' final 13 points.
The Hawaii roadtrip concludes with Academy of Art at 4-11 on the season and 4-6 in PacWest action. With 23 points (11-for-17 from the field), 15 rebounds, and four blocks, Wilson delivered her ninth double-double of the season and the 23rd of her career to give her sole possession of second-most in program history.
