SAN FRANCISCO – Sunday's local non-conference battle of Academy of Art women's soccer and SF State began with 71 minutes of scoreless action, but despite a season-high 11 saves from freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Calderon, a goal in the later stages led the Gators to the 1-0 victory out at CCSF Soccer Field.
The first shot attempt of the match came off the foot of freshman forward
Danielle Medellin for the Urban Knights (0-5-0) in the third minute, but it went wide. Over the next 22 minutes, SF State (1-3-0) sent a barrage of attempts at Calderon who proceeded to save six to preserve the scoreless tie. Senior midfielder
Reyna Valencia then had an opportunity on frame which was saved in the 29th minute.
Coming out of halftime still knotted at 0-0, the teams did not produce another shot until seven minutes had passed and Calderon would continue to deny the Gators on back-to-back chances. Though freshman midfielder
Natalia Cruz nearly capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the 62nd minute, it was SF State who broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute when Alexa Avelar headed in a cross from outside the box by Alyna Flores.
The scoreboard would remain 1-0 in favor of the Gators until the final whistle, but Calderon's 11 saves bettered her previous season-high of nine and were one shy of the top seven in Academy of Art single-match history.
ART U will next face a Pacific West Conference opponent in non-conference action at Fresno Pacific on Sept. 17.
