CHICO, Calif. – Goals seemed to come early and often for Chico State in the season opener against Academy of Art women's soccer, as the Wildcats set a high bar early and didn't relent while going on to take the 2022 season opener from ART U by a final of 6-0 in Thursday's non-conference action.Â
The Wildcats (1-0), who received votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Preseason Poll, found themselves with the lead just 10 minutes into the match, pulling ahead on a goal that shortly followed a free kick following an Urban Knights (0-1) yellow card. Continuing the pressure, goal No. 2 for Chico State came nearly a full five minutes later in the 15th minute by Brynn Chico Howard, while the final of the half came in the 29th on an unassisted goal from Jiana Martin.Â
The second half would be no easier for the Urban Knights, as ART U conceded three goals in the series of eight minutes as the Chico lead grew to 6-0. Despite the goals allowed, it was an impressive ART U debut for freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Calderon, who posted nine saves which is the most by an ART U goalie since fellow teammate junior goalkeeper
Nicole Peoples also made nine saves last season against UH Hilo on Oct. 8, 2021.Â

Academy of Art will look to get into the win column for the first time in 2022 on Saturday when they face off against UC Santa Cruz at noon.Â
