SURPRISE, Ariz. – The opening round of the Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament proved to be no challenge for #6 seed Academy of Art women's tennis, as ART U easily swept #11 seed Metropolitan State University Denver on Wednesday 4-0.
"I'm very proud of how we played today and how we managed to get a 4-0 win," said ART U Head Coach
Clarisse Baca. "I think from line one through five, everyone was on it and ready to battle of regardless of what was ahead. I think always getting the doubles point is a great confidence booster. Now it's time to go home and rest for a big opponent tomorrow."
Spotted an early 1-0 lead due to a singles forfeiture by the Roadrunners (12-8) and starting with a head start in doubles due to yet another forfeiture, all that the Urban Knights (9-5) needed was one doubles victory and two singles wins to move into the quarterfinals. Clinching the doubles point for ART U was the sophomore duo of
Sofia Ragona and
Yun "Nicole" Shiau, as they disposed of Gala Castello and Marie Cool on court one, 6-1. Court two would remain unfinished.
Finishing first in singles was action was freshman
Maria Vittoria Casucci, as she pulled off a quick straight-set victory on court two over Castello, 6-3, 6-2. The final point of the match came on court four from freshman
Julia Ortega, as she breezed past Kayla Myburgh 6-0, 6-1, with all other matches remaining unfinished.
The PacWest Championship Tournament continues tomorrow with the quarterfinals, where #6 seed ART U will battle against #3 seed No. 18 Biola beginning at 1 p.m.
