Knights Outhit CUH Then Nearly Win In Extras To End Trip

KANEOHE, Hawaii – Academy of Art softball had its share of highlights Tuesday in the conclusion to its 10-game Hawaii roadtrip as senior catcher/infielder Lauryn Henderson furthered the program's career home run record, junior pitcher Haley Arnold-Jolley (2-14) tossed six scoreless innings, and junior catcher/utility Cassandra Mittman nearly gave the Urban Knights their third win in extra innings. Despite those efforts, it was Chaminade who walked away from Howard A. Okita Field 5-2 and 4-3 winners in the teams' Pacific West Conference series finale.

GAME 1 – CUH 5, ART U 2
A trio of two-out singles culminated with a run-scoring swing from Mittman in the opening inning, but Chaminade came right back with a run of their own on a single moments later in the bottom of first.

Sophomore pitcher Jolene Rhoades (5-17) limited the Silverswords to just one hit over the next two scoreless innings before the home team strung together four hits for three runs in the fourth frame. Academy of Art immediately got one run back when Henderson cranked a solo homer off a tree in the outfield in top fifth to make it 4-2.

The Knights had a prime chance for more in the sixth when sophomore pitcher/infielder Katie Humphreys led off with a single and sophomore outfielder Cailee Grayhorse-Pupecki followed with a double, but the runners would not score. Chaminade tacked on one more run in their sixth and went on to capture the 5-2 victory.

GAME 2 – CUH 4, ART U 3 (8)
While Arnold-Jolley began the series finale by holding the Silverswords scoreless through the first five innings, Academy of Art plated a pair on two errors by the home team in the third.

With the arrival of the bottom of the sixth came a single and a hit batter before a sacrifice fly and a throwing error resulted in a tie game at 2-2. Mittman doubled to start the seventh, but neither side was able to score in the frame so extra innings ensued.

With two down in the eighth, Henderson walked (bringing her to one off the program's career record) and Brundage singled before Mittman's hot bat singled home the go-ahead run. A walk and three singles made it a 3-3 game in the eighth and, with the bases loaded as well as two outs, Chaminade was able to walk off as 4-3 winners following a single up the middle.

Having now finished its Hawaii roadtrip, Academy of Art sits at 8-39 overall and 5-19 in conference action. Mittman had two hits in each contest Tuesday, finishing 4-for-8 with a double and one run batted in while Henderson was 2-for-4 with a homer, one RBI, and two runs scored in the first game. Also with a hit in both sides of the twinbill, senior catcher Alyssa Brundage now carries a nine-game hit streak, the longest of her career. Arnold-Jolley was untouchable on the day, logging 6.0 scoreless frames with five hits and three walks allowed plus one strikeout.

With four games remaining on its schedule, Chaminade moves to 15-22 in 2022 and 11-17 in PacWest matchups. Jaeda Cabunoc (9-12) had her fingerprints all over game one, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double at the plate in addition to pitching a complete 7.0 innings with two runs allowed on nine hits and two walks for the win. Robbi Gallegos added a pair of RBIs in her 1-for-2 game two and Taylor Genera (6-8) collected the win with one earned run surrendered on six hits and two walks along with one strikeout all in 8.0 innings pitched.

ART U will have six home games to play upon returning to the Bay Area, beginning with Senior Day against Holy Names on Apr. 24.
