IRVINE, Calif. – Every member of Academy of Art women's tennis contributed to the Urban Knights' 6-1 victory over Concordia in the first of three matches in three days down in Southern California.
After freshman
Maria Vittoria Casucci and sophomore
Viktoria Leth teamed up for a 6-3 win over Maya Arksey and Jennifer Jolin in the third spot, the quest for the doubles point came down to court two as the Eagles evened things up with their own 6-3 victory in the first position. A late push by freshmen
Paulina Alvarez and
Erica Hellbe was the difference in their 7-5 triumph over Kimia Rahmani and Alicia Da Rae, giving ART U an early advantage.
In singles action, the sophomore tandem of
Yun "Nicole" Shiau and
Sofia Ragona avenged their doubles result with the former's 6-2, 6-2 win versus Arksey and the latter's 7-6, 6-2 betterment of Tiffany Carrillo. Two inspired finishes to singles matchups on courts three and four secured the overall victory for Academy of Art as Leth rallied past Rahmani 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and freshman
Julia Ortega followed a similar game script against Alyssa Zayat 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Alvarez added one more win in straight sets, besting Jolin 6-3, 6-3 in the sixth position.
The win is the Knights' fifth in their last six matches and puts their overall record at 6-3 while CUI takes its fourth loss in its last six times out, falling to 8-8 overall.
ART U is set for part two of its three-part SoCal roadtrip tomorrow with a 2:30 p.m. matchup at No. 32 Azusa Pacific.
