Momentum Shift In Final Minute Sends Eagles Past Knights

OAKLAND, Calif. – Anyone's game in the final minute and a half, Sunday's Pacific West Conference rematch between Academy of Art women's basketball and Concordia went the Eagles' way 62-57 thanks to a steal and free throws down the stretch. Tough ART U defense to start limited CUI in the opening quarter, but double-doubles for freshmen forward/centers Christy Ojide and Alisha Wilson was not enough to overcome the late push by the visitors inside Tobin Gymnasium.

In a bit of déjà vu from their Dec. 9 meeting with Concordia, the Urban Knights went on a 10-1 run while holding the Eagles to a total of just seven points in the opening quarter. Baskets by Wilson and freshman guard Brooke Rodgers got Academy of Art going midway through the frame then it was a score by freshman guard Milan Tuttle and a free throw from Rodgers in the final minute that grew the lead to 12-5.

A three-point play conversion by Tuttle began the second, yielding ART U's largest lead of the afternoon at 15-7. A 6-2 CUI run was then followed by back-and-forth scoring with redshirt freshman Kaila Murrell's jumper a little over a minute before halftime making it a 23-19 ballgame in favor of Academy of Art.

Alisha WilsonBoth sides continued to convert at the start of the second half and though the Knights were up by six following buckets by Rodgers and Ojide, an 8-1 push by Concordia earned them their first lead since the opening quarter. Murrell's 3-pointer was countered by one from CUI and another jumper by Murrell brought her team within a single point at the third quarter's conclusion.

Long-range scores had the Eagles up by five early in the fourth before layups had them ahead 52-44. Academy of Art answered back by scoring 10 of the game's next 12 points with four coming from Tuttle. A Rodgers basket knotted the contest once more at 56-56 with a little over a minute and a half in regulation and a free throw by junior guard Lauryn Manns subsequently put ART U up briefly, but a steal and score from the Eagles shifted the momentum. Tuttle nearly had her squad back on top, but her miss in the paint combined with Murrell's miss on a potential game-tying triple to result in Concordia's 62-57 victory.

Moving to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in conference play, Academy of Art now sits tied with Point Loma for fifth in the PacWest standings. Ojide tied her season-high with 14 points while adding 13 rebounds plus two blocks for her third double-double of the year. Wilson's 12 points and 13 rebounds gave her now five double-doubles in her last six games and 10 on the season. Tuttle contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals while fellow backcourt mate Rodgers finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Concordia's second consecutive victory moved the Eagles up to 13-7 on the season, 10-4 against PacWest opponents, and second in the conference standings. Michaela VanderKlugt posted a game-high 27 points with 13 rebounds to lead CUI.

The Urban Knights will next host two PacWest Hawaii schools in UH Hilo (Feb. 13) and Hawaii Pacific (Feb. 17) from Walter Gleason Gym in Belmont.
