SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Triumphant 8-1 for its second win in the last three days, Academy of Art women's tennis swept doubles against UC Santa Cruz and won all five of its singles matches in straight sets on Sunday at East Tennis Courts.
The Urban Knights started on a strong note with sophomores
Sofia Ragona and
Sofia Ragona defeating Sarah Beckman and Natalie Sprenger 8-0 in the top doubles position. Freshmen
Paulina Alvarez and
Maria Vittoria Casucci added an 8-2 victory in the third spot and, following NCAA Division III rules, a third doubles point was secured on sophomore
Viktoria Leth and freshman
Erica Hellbe's 8-4 win at two.
Ensuring their squad a match victory, freshman
Julia Ortega and Ragona each made relatively quick work of their singles opponents, winning 6-3, 6-1 in the fourth position and 6-3, 6-0 at the first spot respectively. Casucci furthered the lead by topping Sprenger 6-2, 6-4 at two and Alvarez used momentum from a 7-5 win in the first set to dominate the second 6-1 over Isabella Chacon in the sixth position. Leth rounded out five singles victories for ART U, besting Isabella Francis 6-4, 6-3 at five.
In action next weekend, Academy of Art will travel to Turlock to face Stanislaus State on Feb. 26 at noon.
