BELMONT, Calif. – Academy of Art women's basketball senior guard
Lauryn Manns delivered a game-high 17 points and freshman forward/center
Alisha Wilson posted a double-double, but it was not enough for the Urban Knights in their 2022-23 home opener as Sonoma State jumped in front early and outlasted an ART U six-point scoring edge in the second half for the 62-51 victory inside Walter Gleason Gym on Tuesday evening.
After scoring the contest's first nine points, the Seawolves soon pushed a double-digit lead despite Manns' 3-pointer getting Academy of Art on the board. SSU carried a 23-8 advantage into the second quarter and briefly expanded it until a 7-2 surge bookended by Manns baskets cut it to 12. Junior guard
Ashana Hinds knocked down the Knights' final two buckets of the half which settled at 39-22 in favor of the visitors.
Hinds' second triple of the night opened the second half while consistent conversions at the free throw line helped keep the margin from growing until ART U closed the third quarter on a 7-2 run with three different Knights registering points. Though SSU responded by going up 18 midway through the final quarter to help seal the 62-51 win, the game's final seven points were all scored by the home team including five by Wilson.
Academy of Art, now 0-8 on the season, was paced by Manns' aforementioned game-high 17 points which included two 3-pointers plus two assists and two steals. Wilson's 12-point, 11-rebound double-double was her third of the season and came with four steals plus two blocks. Hinds was the team's third-leading scorer with a season-high nine points while sophomore guard
Jadence Clifton added three steals, marking her third time with three or more thefts this year.
Sonoma State moves to 3-6 overall after four Seawolves scored in double figures led by 14 points from Cielo Gonzalez.
ART U will resume conference play this Saturday, Dec. 10 with a 1 p.m. tipoff hosting Chaminade back inside Walter Gleason Gym.
