Gators Secure Win After Knights' Second Quarter Comeback

SAN FRANCISCO – A 13-point deficit early in the second quarter did not faze Academy of Art women's basketball as the Urban Knights promptly highlighted their final game of the 2022 SF State Gator Invitational with 13 unanswered points on Saturday evening inside SFSU's Main Gymnasium. Unfortunately for ART U, the Gators steadily built a double-digit lead over the second half before winning 62-52 on their home court despite sophomore guard Jadence Clifton's game-high 21 points and another double-double from sophomore forward/center Alisha Wilson.

Up 8-0 just two minutes into the ballgame, SF State had soon pushed a 13-3 advantage and turned that into 13 one minute into the following quarter. Clifton, Wilson, and senior guard Lauryn Manns then helmed a comeback as each scored multiple baskets during a 13-0 surge. Clifton and Manns each nailed 3-pointers on successive possessions to power the run which brough Academy of Art all the way back to a 21-21 score.

The Gators, who had worked their way back in front 29-23 at halftime, saw their margin drop to four points multiple times in the third quarter as Clifton and Wilson shared the load on offense. Though the difference did not return to double figures for the duration of the third frame, it did in the fourth after a triple from Samaria Velazquez came with seven minutes and 26 seconds to go. A jumper by Manns shortened the gap to seven with nearly five minutes remaining, but SFSU maintained and walked away with the 62-52 win.

Academy of Art, 0-2 overall after its season-opening tournament, had Clifton serve as the team's scoring leader with her 21 points coming on 6-for-9 shooting from the field, 2-for-4 from long range, and 7-for-9 at the foul line. The Communications & Media Technologies major added six rebounds and three assists while Wilson collected her second double-double in as many contests with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Manns added eight points while sophomore forward/center Christy Ojide came off the bench to score six points, grab seven rebounds, and block two shots.

Winners of its first two games of the year, SF State was led by Mya Blake's six 3-pointers good for 19 points.

The Urban Knights will next be in action on back-to-back days once again versus Cal State East Bay (Nov. 18) and Stanislaus State (Nov. 19) as part of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge in Turlock.
