SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Less than two weeks before officially tipping off the season, Academy of Art women's basketball debuted its 2022-23 squad in an exhibition against NCAA Division I Santa Clara. Though the Broncos established a lead early en route to a 95-36 win inside their own Leavey Center, Tuesday evening was an opportunity for the Urban Knights to begin building chemistry with one another.
The first ART U basket of the game came on a layup by sophomore forward/center
Alisha Wilson and, while SCU held a double-digit advantage approaching the end of the opening quarter, junior guard
Ashana Hinds nailed a triple to make it 14-7 when the buzzer sounded.
Scoring nearly twice their point total in the second frame, Academy of Art got started with senior guard
Lauryn Manns' first bucket then a pair of Wilson layups sandwiched a triple from freshman guard
Madison Johnson. Sophomore forward/center
Christy Ojide later converted a three-point play and the scoreboard read 43-20 SCU at halftime.
Though Santa Clara continued to expand its advantage in the third, a burst of ART U offense came in the final minute and a half with Ojide delivering another three-point play and Manns pairing a free throw with a jumper soon after. Long range success by the Broncos kept them firmly in front the rest of the way as the evening concluded with a 95-36 final.
Academy of Art was led by 10 points and two steals from Manns as well as eight points and seven rebounds from Ojide while Marya Hudgins posted a game-high 31 points for SCU.
ART U will officially begin its 2022-23 season on Friday, Nov. 11 with a 3 p.m. matchup against Cal State Monterey Bay as part of the SF State Gator Invitational.
