Penguins Take First Leg Of Clásico Cup From Knights 3-0

SAN FRANCISCO – After the first 45 minutes of the Pacific West Conference battle between Academy of Art women's soccer and Dominican went by without either team scoring a goal, DU struck three times in the second half as the Penguins claimed victory in the first leg of the inaugural Bay Area Clásico Cup by a 3-0 final on Sunday.

Aggressive from the opening kickoff were the Penguins (4-6-4, 1-4-1 PacWest), generating five shots within the first 10 minutes of play. Helping keep the Urban Knights (1-13-0, 0-6-0 PacWest) in the match during the first frame was freshman goalkeeper Alicia Calderon, as she made four stops including a phenomenal save on a great scoring opportunity by Dominican. Academy of Art threatened in the half with a trio of their own chances, including one on target by junior forward Brooklyn Villapudua, but none could find the back of the net.

Continuing to create pressure in the attacking half, Dominican generated another 13 shots in the second half, ultimately breaking the scoreless tie thanks to an Alejandra Melendez tally in the 62nd minute. Insurance did not come until the 74th minute then the Penguins added one final marker good measure in the 87th minute.

Despite the three goals, Calderon did produce another three saves in the second frame for a total of seven on the match, bumping her season total up to 102 which is now the third most in a single ART U season.

Academy of Art returns to the pitch a week from today on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they complete their portion of the Bay Area Clásico Cup against Holy Names beginning at 11 a.m.
