HILO, Hawaii – Battling the seventh ranked team in all of NCAA Division II in No. 7 UH Hilo, Academy of Art women's soccer could not contain the surging Vulcan offense after they started the scoring in the seventh minute, as ART U finished its Hawaii roadtrip with a 7-0 defeat in Pacific West Conference play on Saturday.
Showing why they are one of the top ranked teams in the country, the Vulcans (7-0-1, 2-0-0 PacWest) were ready from the opening kick and produced a total of five first half goals, all scored by different student-athletes. Following the goal in the seventh minute, Hilo struck again in the 13th before later adding the third goal of the match during the 33rd minute. Only Nanea Wall found the scoresheet twice, she assisted on the fourth and fifth goals of the frame that occurred in the 35th and 40th minutes.
The Urban Knights (0-10-0, 0-3-0 PacWest) found little room to operate on the offensive side of the ball, though they did generate a shot attempt in the second half from freshman forward
Danielle Medellin. Unfortunately it was not enough to overcome the Vulcans, who added another pair of goals in the 82nd and 85th minutes to push the final to 7-0.
Between the pipes, freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Calderon closed the match with seven saves, five of which came during the second half. That pushed her total to 23 saves over the course of the three-match roadtrip, while her PacWest-leading total saves this season increased to 74.
Academy of Art will return to San Francisco for its next match, as ART U will play host to Biola (Oct. 6) and Azusa Pacific (Oct 8).
