SURPRISE, Ariz. – In a grueling match under the desert sun at the Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament, No. 24 Academy of Art women's tennis went all the way down to the wire with No. 25 Fresno Pacific, as the match was 3-3 hinging on the final singles match in a tie-breaking third set. Ultimately, it would be FPU that would get the crucial final point and capture the 4-3 win in the final match of a trilogy between the two teams.
Just one day after the No. 7 seed Urban Knights (5-6) saw four singles matches enter a tie-breaking third set, another three matches would do the same in this rematch with the No. 6 Sunbirds (7-9). All of the action came after ART U had dropped the doubles point despite a crucial win by the freshman team of
Aitana Comas Adam and
Erica Hellbe. The duo dominated Alice Marques and Daimy Paula by a score of 6-1 on court three to give the Knights the chance at the early lead.
Coming out of the gates in singles play, ART U was able to tie the match at 1-1 thanks to a win on court six from freshman
Julia Ortega. There, she bounced her opponent Paula in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. After an FPU win on court two, sophomore
Sofia Ragona earned the first three-set victory on court one against opponent Mariia Borodii, needing a tiebreaker in the final set before finally earning the win 2-6, 6-1, 7-6(7-5).
The match again went back and forth, with FPU retaking the lead after a claiming a court five win, but the Knights immediately earned their second three-set win of the day on court four from Comas Adam. After sweeping her opening set against Marques, she would sweep the the third set keep the match alive, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. It all came down to court three, where sophomore
Yun "Nicole" Shiau was win the second set to force an extra set, but was ultimately defeated by a final of 1-6, 6-3, 4-6.
ART U will play in their final match of the season tomorrow in the seventh-place match of the consolation bracket against No. 5 seed Point Loma beginning at 9 a.m. PST.
