SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – After pressuring the opposing side with shots all game, Academy of Art women's soccer finally drew even with Dominican thanks to the first goal of the year by senior midfielder
Sydney Cooke. However, it was the Penguins who would score the golden goal in overtime, taking Saturday's Pacific West Conference matchup by a final of 2-1.
The Urban Knights (0-2-0, 0-2-0 PacWest) generated more offense in the first half, coming up with a total of four shots, two of which were on goal by junior forward
Brooklyn Morera and redshirt freshman
Morgan Day. Dominican (1-0-0, 1-0-0 PacWest) goalkeeper Nicole Maler was up to the challenge, making two saves to keep ART U off the board. It also allowed the Penguins to generate their own offense, putting up three shots of their own including a goal from Danielle Gonzalez after she was set up on a pass by Tanya Bills.
Tasked with defending their lead, the Penguins battled against a tough Urban Knights team that posted another four shots in the second half, and it took a solid save from new Dominican keeper Jacqueline Catano to keep the Knights off the board. It would not remain that way for long, as ART U finally got their first goal of the season just before regulation was to expire on a strike from the left side just outside the box by Cooke to knot the score 1-1.
In a strong bounce-back effort by the Penguins, they regrouped and were able to make quick work in overtime by converting on their first chance with a goal by Abby Gould, with Gonzalez appearing on the scoresheet yet again with an assist. Gonzalez ended the game with both a goal and an assist, while teammate Gabrielle Wampler led the Penguins in shots with two. Cooke led all ART U shot takers in the game with three, while Morera ended the day with two of her own.
The Urban Knights will get the chance to rebound on Thursday in their first road match of the 2020-21 campaign against Holy Names.
