SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art men's soccer said goodbyes to senior goalkeeper
Kris Jensson and senior midfielder
Jaret Gil prior to their match with Holy Names on Friday, and then proceeded to send the duo off in their final collegiate contest with a dominating 5-0 shutout over the Hawks, with the match headlined by a hat trick from senior forward
Adrian Cekala.
"I absolutely loved watching my team play today," said ART U Assistant Coach
Danny Kirkland. "From the first minute until the last we were aggressive, confident, played some excellent soccer and thoroughly deserved the win. The back line and [junior goalkeeper]
Davis King showed great discipline and focus to keep a clean sheet, and in the final third [of the match] we were lively and out for goals. Adrian [Cekala] getting his hat trick capped a superb individual performance, but the overall team display was the most pleasing."
Cekala quickly put up the first two goals of his hat trick in the first half, getting the scoring started for the Urban Knights (4-2-0, 4-2-0 PacWest) in just the sixth minute when he converted the penalty kick opportunity that was awarded after sophomore forward
Gilly Miller was taken down just inside the box. The second goal would be an insurance marker that came in the 37th minute, helping the Urban Knights to establish a 2-0 halftime lead. It took only six shots by ART U to tally the two goals, as the Urban Knights actually trailed the Hawks (1-3-0, 1-3-0 PacWest) in the shot category, 8-6.
Eleven second half shots for ART U would help even the tide, but while the two squads would record the same number of shots (17), only the Urban Knights could put the ball in the net with three more scores. Sophomore midfielder
William Mychaltchouk placed his name on the score sheet for the first time this season, burying a goal assisted by Cekala shortly after the second half kicked off in the 52nd minute. It wasn't until the 81st minute that Cekala capped off his hat trick, giving him six goals on the season and matching his career high that he scored during his 2018 season. The final tally came just before regulation expired, as freshman midfielder
Elvis Mensah netted the first goal of his Urban Knights career in the 89th minute.
Today's match
had ripples through the ART U history books, as the effort from Cekla gives him 14 goals and 32 points in career, both of which are third most at ART U. In goals, Cekala ranks just behind second-place Kristof Urbanyi (15) and first-place Grimur Grimsson (16), while he sits a little further behind the same duo in reverse order when it comes to ART U career points, as Urbanyi places first with 37 while Grimsson checks in with 36.
All of the action came after a ceremony held prior to the match for seniors Gil and Jensson, both of whom have left their own mark on the ART U program. Jensson leaves ranking in the top-3 in
every ART U goalkeeper category, logging over 3,200 goalkeeper minutes with 164 career saves. Meanwhile, Gil has totaled over 1,900 minutes across four seasons in his ART U career, and highlights his career with a
game-winner in a 1-0 win over Concordia in the final match of the 2017 campaign.
"Two tremendous members of the program got their last minutes for us today in
Kris Jensson and
Jaret Gil," Kirkland said. "Everything about those two young men epitomizes this program. They are hard working, selfless, dedicated leaders of the group and have added quality and professionalism to us during their time at ART U. We wish them all the best for their future endeavors and what better way to sign off for them than today's performance."
