Late HPU Goal Spells Heartbreak For Women's Soccer

SAN FRANCISCO – With 86 minutes of game action passed and looking as if Academy of Art women's soccer's match against Hawaii Pacific was destined for overtime, HPU would sneak a goal in the back of the net during the 87th minute to avoid extra time and steal a 1-0 Pacific West Conference victory on Sunday.

It was a fast-paced affair between the Urban Knights (2-9-2, 1-7-0 PacWest) and the Sharks (4-8-1, 4-3-1 PacWest), but one that remained without a goal despite golden chances from both teams throughout the match. One of the main reasons neither team could find the scoreboard was the performance from ART U senior keeper Jordyn Wight who, coming off of her career-best eight saves against Azusa Pacific, would make seven saves today against HPU. Among those saves were a beautiful pair of kick saves, one coming in each half, as she twice swung out her left foot to turn away a would-be goal scorer.

Unfortunately, one of the last shots that HPU would launch would end up in the back of the net. Starting from the left wing, Marcella Chan sent a high, looping cross into the box where she would find a streaking Soraya Santos at the back post, with Santos finishing on the volley for the only goal of the match.

Leading the Knights in shots was junior forward Brooklyn Morera with three, including a lining shot that would drift just wide of the frame. Just behind her with a pair of shots was redshirt freshman forward Hannah Moore, putting both of her looks on goal including what was the best chance of the mach for the Knights. Just minutes before HPU would tally their goal, Moore found herself streaking through the back line for a one-on-one chance with Sharks goalkeeper Madi DePhillips, but it was DePhillips that would win the battle by saving a shot to the lower left corner to keep everything level.

Senior day has arrived for Academy of Art, as the Knights will honor their seniors with a pregame ceremony before battling Chaminade in the final home contest of the year on Nov. 4 beginning at 10 a.m.
