LA MIRADA, Calif. – Opening Academy of Art volleyball's second Southern California roadtrip was three sets of the same score in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) Pacific West Conference defeat at the hands of Biola inside Chase Gymnasium on Thursday.
After the Eagles started with a 10-5 lead in the opening frame, a kill by senior middle blocker/opposite
Sadie Emery started a quick 3-1 comeback and she would factor in another push late as the Urban Knights faced set point. She recorded a kill then her second block solo of conference play, but BU ended up capturing the set 25-19.
Trailing 8-7 to begin the second, ART U grabbed a 10-8 advantage on kills by junior outside hitter
Isaura Santos and Emery, but Biola shifted back with a 10-3 surge. In the frame's late stages, Academy of Art scored four of five with freshman outside hitter
Ashley Mecham putting a down a kill and freshman setter
Nina Garcia surprising the Eagles defense with her own kill yet the final three points went the home team's way for a 25-19 result and a 2-0 lead.
The Knights and Eagles traded points in the third and just one point separated the teams at 12-11 after a combined block by freshman outside hitter
Katherine Von Kraut and Emery. Eight of the next 11 scores came from Biola and, despite kills by Mecham, Von Kraut, and Emery thereafter, the scoreboard read 25-19 in BU's favor when all was said and done.
Academy of Art moves to 5-13 overall and 2-8 against conference opponents with Thursday's results. Von Kraut led the team with 10 kills while Santos added nine and Emery finished with seven. Junior setter
