SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The match between Academy of Art women's soccer and UC Santa Cruz was level at the half on Tuesday, but a four-goal outburst in the second frame would give UCSC the win in non-conference action, 4-0.
Both teams were trading shots through the first half, and while the Banana Slugs (6-7-2, 1-0-0 C2C) had the edge in total chances, the shots on goal were nearly even with the Urban Knights (2-6-2, 1-4-0 PacWest) trailing by only one (3-2). Keeping ART U in the match early was senior goalkeeper
Jordyn Wight, as she denied three of the eight looks she faced.
Tides would change in the second frame, as the Banana Slugs would find the back of the net with their first shot of the half in the 56th minute when Ainsley Smith scored off an assist from Alexia Santos. Seizing control after the initial goal was UCSC, as they would strike for three quick goals beginning with back-to-back goals in the 81st minute before capping off the scoring with a final insurance goal in the 83rd minute.
Leading the way for ART U was the combination of graduate student midfielder
Melissa Wilson and junior defender
Avica Robings, as each chipped in a pair of shots with one of them making their way on goal. Also adding to the offense was junior forward
Brooklyn Morera with a pair of shots of her own, while senior midfielder
Sydney Cooke put an attempt on goal.
It will be a return to PacWest play the next time out for the Urban Knights, as ART U will travel to Southern California to take on the duo of Concordia and Azusa Pacific beginning on Oct. 23.
