IRVINE, Calif. – After starting the game by shooting over 66 percent from the field in the opening quarter, Academy of Art women's basketball found itself three points back of Concordia (Calif.) at halftime, but the Eagles gained separation in the third and went on to win 95-61 in Pacific West Conference rematch inside CU Arena on Saturday.
Though CUI struck first, ART U came back with conversions on three consecutive possessions including 3-pointers from senior forward
Ines Medina and graduate student guard
Tayler Bennett. Though the Urban Knights continued to score at an extremely high efficiency, Concordia matched them with regularity and it was not until a late triple by senior guard
Josselyn Morris fell that Academy of Art had developed a six-point margin.
Coming back with an 8-0 run in the early part of the second quarter, the Eagles briefly went up 30-28, but Academy of Art answered with a big 3-pointer from Medina's hand. Sophomore guard
Chanel Stuart added another make from distance, but CUI finished the half with six straight to move in front 38-35.
That flicker of momentum turned into a full burn as a 15-2 surge started the second half, getting Concordia a 53-37 advantage. Another 12-0 push came thereafter and, despite a breakaway layup for Bennett in the final minute of the third, it was a 69-42 margin for the home team heading to the fourth quarter. Medina and junior guard/forward
Lily Perkins converted back-to-back buckets in the frame's first minute and a half, but CUI soon pushed its lead north of 30 points and the end result was a 95-61 final score.
ART U moves to 9-15 on the season and 7-13 in conference play. After her six triples in the previous game, Bennett's four 3-pointers on Saturday gave her 73 this year as she continues to chase the program's single-season record (78). Those makes contributed to 18 points while Medina added 10 points and five rebounds. Stuart finished with a career-high six assists on top of six points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Winning its second straight home game, Concordia rises to 16-9 overall and 14-6 in PacWest matchups. The Eagles were led by a game-high 36 points from Michaela Vandeklugt.
The Urban Knights look ahead to their final home game of the regular season this Thursday, Feb. 27 hosting Point Loma.
