LA MIRADA, Calif. – Following an inclement weather delay that adjusted the day's doubleheader to be split over Saturday and Sunday, Academy of Art softball brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but Biola escaped with a 7-3 win at Freedom Field on Saturday night. Sparked by the first home run of freshman infielder
Haley Randall's collegiate career, the late comeback was extended by run-scoring singles from sophomore outfielder
Bethany Mitchell and senior outfielder
Gabi Hirsch as well.
With first pitch being thrown some seven hours after originally scheduled, a short top of the first was followed by the Eagles' first run of the contest on a bases loaded bunt single. ART U got a runner to third in the third frame, but Biola proceeded to expand its advantage with four runs on three hits later in that same inning.
The 5-0 lead became 7-0 on a two-run homer in the fifth, but the Urban Knights seized their final opportunity to come back in the seventh. The first pitch of the inning was sent beyond the left field fence as Randall connected on her first collegiate homer then a walk and an error set up a scoring opportunity for Mitchell who singled one home. Two batters later and with the bases loaded, Hirsch stepped in and fought through an eight-pitch at-bat before singling another in. BU, however, then managed to get the final two outs it needed for a 7-3 victory.
Three games into its first PacWest series, ART U now sits at 1-11 overall and 0-3 in conference. Randall finished 1-for-2 with the home run, Mitchell was 2-for-3 with one run batted in, and Hirsch ended 2-for-4 with one RBI as well.
Upping its season record to 6-2 and PacWest record to 3-0, Biola was led by Kylie Velasco's 3-for-3 performance that included a home run and four RBIs. Paula Damas (3-0) picked up the win after allowing two earned runs on six hits in addition to three strikeouts and Paige Austin earned her second save of the year with a scoreless final inning.
Academy of Art will return to Freedom Field tomorrow morning for a 9 a.m. start to the final game of the series with Biola.
